The Art of Authentic Curation
Weaving Family Stories into Your Home’s Interior
As an interior designer, I’ve always believed that a home should be a reflection of its occupants’ lives, telling their unique stories and holding deep personal meaning. A home is more than just a beautifully designed space; it’s a sanctuary that celebrates the people who live there.
I call this approach “authentically curated” design. It’s about incorporating cherished possessions, family heirlooms, and meaningful objects into your home in a way that feels intentional and thoughtful. These items might evoke special memories, have been passed down through generations, or simply hold sentimental value.
But how do we incorporate these special items into our modern lives without creating clutter? For me, the answer came after my mother passed away, and my sister and I were tasked with clearing our family home of 54 years.
Among the treasures we discovered was a stunning collection of silverware, including the wedding silver of my great-great-grandparents from 1875. This sparked a desire to repurpose these items, giving them new life and meaning in our contemporary home.
Today, our home in Cognac features an 1875 soup tureen transformed into a champagne bucket, a 1934 hot water jug repurposed as a cocktail pitcher, and vintage family photos displayed in antique frames. These items not only add beauty and character to our space but also serve as a connection to our family’s rich history.
The Power of Repurposing
Repurposing treasured items is not only a great way to reduce waste but also to infuse your home with authenticity and personality. By giving new life to old items, you’re creating a unique narrative that reflects your family’s story.
